music reviews, yippie!

recommended record: un jazz by nu jazz

so how does my rating system work? basically i give out crosses. max is three crosses and lowest is none. more crosses might not always mean a better record, sometimes just a more interesting and different record. a cross looks like this: ⍀

my reviews are much more focused on subjective and non technical aspects of music and i am heavily biased. what i say is a good album is likely not universal.

self titled by cigarettes after sex - ⍀⍀⍀

have ya ever been rejected by someone you planned out your whole life with in our head? if yes then this is album seems to capture that pretty well. cigs after sex is the sad romance band and this is the album that started it all and they for some reason have no merch for. in my opinion it is their best album by a vast margin. their other work while still capturing this aesthetic decently, doesn't actually pin it to wall and absolutely dominate it like this record does. i have cried to "k." and "apocalypse" also hits hard.

this moody night urban heartbroken kind of sound is really sexy tbh. it works and that's why they are surprisingly popular. this sound isn't too out there or particulary innovative. but with that said they have mastered it on their first try. playing this album late night does get you a highly emotional sonic experience and truly when i listen to an LP i am normally looking for something not only good but something that gives one an experience. setting does half the work but an adequate album is still necessary.

as a last comment on it's success in the sadboy/sadgirl aesthetic, many bike night motorway 300kmh videos have been done with these tracks.... just goes to show how this album nails it all down.

edit: for the people who see it as boring or repetitive: this is litterally slow core! it's supposed to repetitive and drawn out. it's fine if you don't like that type of music, but don't expect an album to be something it's not. i also don't like the strokes for the same reasons: every song sounds the same / repetitive, but here that's valid criticism because they seem to aim for a more energetic place in records like room on fire. the self titled cigarettes after sex aims for this repetitive approach so criticising that would not make sense. this is like criticising a cigarette brand in a review for making smoke. man yes that's the point, maybe you just don't like cigs in the first place. pray to jacobfuckingjones

dark side of the moon by pink floyd - ⍀⍀⍀

dark side of the moon is the most recognizeable album of all time. while many call it a bland prog album, others hail it as THE prog album, a hailmark in music history. to add nothing new to the conversation i of course believe this record should be praised and remembered as a stepping stone not just in music but in post modern society.

before this album released, the us had gone through the vietnam war, which made the public untrustworthy of goverment and the shift from product to service based economy marked many americans who also were victims of the stagflation and high unemployment rates of the period. both of these elements combined create a dissolutioned people. this album is about the insane, the dissolutioned, the different, the unknown, the uncertain. overrall this album uses interludes of such insane people to provoke unneasyness in the listener at the beguinning, however after all the epics, jazzy moments and riffs are done, the same people talking now make us rethink these interludes as something more adventurous and exciting, a discovery.

and just to really emphasize this aspect of the album: interludes are used to create an atmosphere wayyyy better than practically all records i've listened to. some exceptions are gy!be and specifically soundtracks for the blind. these are post-rock albums. post-rock in a myriad of ways relies on these interludes to acompany their big sounds. which makes me appreciate the interludes on dark side of the moon even more!

also those jazzy moments... ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...... so good... so good...
